Ernest Everett Just (1883-1941), US biologist. Just studied at Dartmouth College, but like all black graduates of the time faced difficulties. Unable to gain tenure at a major university, he taught at Howard University, Washington DC. From 1909 onwards, he carried out research every summer at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. He obtained his doctorate in 1916 from the University of Chicago and became an internationally recognised research scientist. He was the inaugural recipient of the Spingarn Medal in 1915. His major publication was 'The Biology of the Cell Surface' (1939). Photographed in 1922.
