Artist's Description
Enrico Fermi (1901-1954), Italian-US physicist who did fundamental theoretical and experimental work on nuclear and quantum physics. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938 for his work on neutron irradiation and slow neutrons. He emigrated to the USA the same year. During World War II, his work was central to the development of the world's first nuclear reactor in 1941. This project then became part of the Manhattan Project, and led to the first atom bombs. This photograph is from a collection taken at Manhattan Project sites between 1943 and 1946.
