Artist's Description
Enigma encryption machine patent, 1928. Printed patent drawings of the mechanical cypher machine invented by German electrical engineer Arthur Scherbius (1878-1929). This encoding machine was used by the forces of Nazi Germany during the Second World War. It was a very strong encryption method, but was famously broken by Allied cryptanalysts to help them intercept and decode German wartime messages. This is patent number 1,657,411 from the US Patent Office, dated 24 January 1928.
