Description
Signal box. Engraving of a section through a railway signal box in the mid-19th century. Railways at this time used a semaphore system, where the position of pole-mounted signals was used to pass information to train drivers. These signals were moved by wires which led to the signal box. The signalman pulled on these wires using 1.2-metre long levers.
