Description
Enceladus hydrothermal activity and geysers, illustration. Enceladus is one of the smaller moons of the ringed planet Saturn (upper right), with a diameter of around 505 kilometres. Plumes of water, hydrocarbons and other chemicals jet outwards from its surface. This surface is thought to be water ice over liquid water, a possible location for life in the Solar System outside Earth. The three inset images at bottom illustrate (from left to right): water-rock reactions; hydrothermal vents ('white smokers'); and surface jets. The main image shows the rocky core, the ocean, and the ice shell. Image published in 2017.
