Artist's Description

E.G. Otis. Illustration of Elisha Graves Otis (1811-61), American inventor. He is stood on his 'safety elevator', demonstrating it at the World's Trade Fair in New York in 1854. During the demonstration, Otis was raised on the lift platform before having the supporting cable cut. His lift design incorporated a safety brake, a device which prevented the platform from falling and Otis was unharmed. His invention, patented in 1852, brought him great acclaim and he established a factory at Yonkers, New York. The first public lift was inaugurated on the 23rd of March 1857 in a store on Broadway, New York. He also patented a steam-driven elevator.
