Description
Einstein@Home, screen saver computer graphicshowing the night sky. Einstein@Home is a volunteer computing project designed to search for gravitational waves. Volunteer, or distributed, computing allows scientists to replicate supercomputing power by utilising idle time on personal computers owned by the public. When a computer is idle, data from the LIGO and GEO 600 laser interferometers are sent to the user's computer. The screen saver performs calculations and sends the results back to a base server. Gravitational waves are ripples in space-time created by spinning neutron stars (pulsars) or colliding black holes. They were first predicted by Albert Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity. Einstein@Home runs on the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC).
