Artist's Description

Edward Laurens Mark (1847-1946), US zoologist and anatomist. Mark studied at the University of Michigan, and was awarded his doctorate from the University of Leipzig, Germany, in 1876. He was an instructor at Harvard from 1877, working in cytology research. One of his papers, published in 1881, saw the first use of the Harvard referencing system. He was appointed Hersey Professor of Anatomy in 1885, retiring in 1921. He was also Director of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research from 1902 to 1931. The 'Mark Anniversary Volume' (1903) marked 25 years of research. Celebrations at Harvard marked his 75th (1922) and 90th (1937) birthdays.
