Artist's Description

Edible snail. Macrophotograph of the head of an edible snail (Helix pomatia). Its eye stalks are seen in upper frame. These snails are common throughout Europe and are prized as a delicacy. They feed mainly on plant matter. Edible snails hibernate beneath the soil during winter, emerging again in spring. They are hermaphrodites, and mate in late spring. Both partners can lay up to 100 eggs. Seen next to the snail at lower left is a lichen, a symbiotic organism comprising a fungus and an alga.
