Artist's Description
Ectoganus and Pantolambda, illustration. These extinct prehistoric mammals are shown foraging among vegetation in the Rocky Mountains of North America during the Middle Palaeocene (63 to 59 million years ago). In the foreground (lower centre) is Ectoganus, an example of a taeniodont, a group of animals that developed prominent front teeth for digging and rooting. Ectoganus was about the size of a wombat. At centre and in the background at upper left is Pantolambda, an example of an early large browser from a group known as pantodonts. It was about the size of a sheep.
