Description
Molecular model of the Ebola viral protein 35 (VP35, bright pink and yellow) bound to a molecule of double stranded RNA (ribonucleic acid, light pink and red). This protein helps the virus to evade its host's immune system by blocking the activation of interferon. VP35 binds to dsRNA in two different ways. The first (red) involves direct binding to the backbone of the RNA and is sequence independent. The second (pink), known as the 'end-cap' interaction, involves the binding of hydrophobic residues in the protein to the blunt ends of the RNA molecule.
