Description
Eastern coast of China, 19th-century map. The English text (top right) describes the geography of the coast, and the map includes depths obtained by soundings. There are ten insets at left and right. Locations and features shown and named here include the Yellow Sea, the Eastern Sea, the Imperial Sea, the Gulf of Leo-Tong, and the Straits of Korea. The Chinese provinces (from top to bottom) are named as: Pe-Chih-Le, Shan-Tung, Keang-Nan, Che-Keang, and Fo-Keen. At lower left is part of Formosa (Taiwan). At upper right is part of Korea. This map was produced in 1835 by Scottish hydrographer James Horsburgh (1762-1836), working for the East India Company, and published in London.
