Description
Dzibilchaltun, Mexico, satellite image. North is at top. The ruins of this ancient site, built by the Mayan civilisation, are at centre, surrounded by forest and roads (across top). The structure at centre right is the Temple of Seven Dolls. The alignment of the temple means that the rising sun shines into the temple on important astronomical dates such as the Spring equinox. The complex has been dated to 300 BC. Image obtained by the Ikonos satellite on 17 February 2001.
