Description
Dune sea. International Space Station image of a dune sea in the Sahara Desert, Eastern Algeria, Africa. North is at upper right. A dune sea, or erg, is a flat area of desert covered in wind- swept sand (orange). Large sand dunes, known as mega-dunes, are seen between the dark troughs. These dunes are stationary, but are covered in smaller active dunes, whose crests move over the course of decades. Between some of the larger dunes are areas (grey) that have been swept clean of sand to reveal the underlying mud and salts. Image taken on 8th August 2006.
