Artist's Description

Duck-billed platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), 19th-century illustration. This animal was first described and illustrated for European science by George Shaw in 1799. Initial description of this strange animal brought disbelief, as did the later revelation that this monotreme mammal laid eggs. Engraved by W. Lizars from 'The Natural History of Marsupialia or Pouched Animals' (1841) by George Robert Waterhouse, part of Jardine's series 'The Naturalist's Library'.
