Description
Drake's attack on Santiago. 16th-century illustration of a fleet led by English corsair Sir Francis Drake attacking Santiago (in the Cape Verde Islands) near the mouth of a river. His men looted the town and razed it. This was a relatively minor conflict, preparation for later battles. This attack took place from 11-28 November 1585 during Drake's 1585-6 voyage to the West Indies, and was part of the Anglo-Spanish War. This map was published in 1589 by Italian cartographer Giovanni Battista Boazio. For a series of four illustrations of attacks carried out during this voyage, see images C023/8620, C026/8912, C026/8913, and C026/8914.
