Description
Drake's attack on Saint Augustine. 16th-century illustration of the attack carried out on the Spanish settlement of Saint Augustine (now part of Florida, USA) on 28-29 May 1586 by a fleet led by English corsair Sir Francis Drake. The English forces destroyed a tower in the sand dunes (centre), a log fort (upper centre), and the main settlement (top left). This attack took place during Drake's 1585-6 voyage to the West Indies, and was part of the Anglo-Spanish War. Published in 1589 by Italian cartographer Giovanni Battista Boazio. Cropped detail in C023/8621 and C023/8622. Three other attacks in images C026/8912, C026/8913, and C026/8914.
