Description
Drake's attack on Cartagena. 16th-century illustration of a fleet led by English corsair Sir Francis Drake, attacking Cartagena (in present-day Colombia). Drake's forces captured the city and occupied it for over two months, looting and extorting a large ransom. This attack took place from 9-11 February 1586 during Drake's 1585-6 voyage to the West Indies, and was part of the Anglo-Spanish War. This map was published in 1589 by Italian cartographer Giovanni Battista Boazio. For a series of four illustrations of attacks carried out during this voyage, see images C023/8620, C026/8912, C026/8913, and C026/8914.
