Artist's Description
Illustration of the 14th century legend of the dog of Montargis. The legend tells of the murder of a French courterior Aubry de Montdidier. The only witness to Montdidier's murder was his dog. The dog started showing hostility towards a knight and it was decided that there should be a trial by combat between the knight, Robert Macaire, and the dog. The dog won the fight and Macaire confessed to the murder. Illustration from 1845.
