Description
DNA fingerprints. DNA (DeoxyriboNucleic Acid) fra- gments stained with ethidium bromide and visualised by Ultra-Violet (UV) light. DNA fragments are seen as bright bands" within light smears. DNA samples containing many different sized fragments can be separated by size on an agarose gel by electrophoresis. When an electric current is applied, smaller fragments move faster through the gel. Individual "lanes" of the gel will contain one or more "bands" of different sized fragments from the original sample. Such gel electrophoresis is commonly used in experiments such as DNA finger- printing or during the cloning of human genes."
