Artist's Description
DNA fingerprinting. Dawn Ashworth, the 15 year old Leicestershire schoolgirl who was raped & murdered by Colin Pitchfork in July 1986. Pitchfork was found guilty on DNA fingerprinting evidence of the rape & murder of Ashworth, & of another schoolgirl in 1983. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 1988. Pitchfork, born in 1961, was trapped because he arranged for a workmate to stand in for him when over 2000 men in 3 villages took the DNA fingerprinting test. It was the first mass screening by genetic fingerprinting. Pitchfork's deception was revealed to police. He was tested & his DNA fingerprint was found to match that obtained from semen on the girls' bodies.
