Description
Diagram of the CMS particle detector. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) is one of the experiments being proposed for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva. CMS was designed to study proton-proton collisions. In common with other experiments designed for this purpose, the main features of CMS are; inner vertex detectors to study short-lived particles, Electro-Magnetic (EM) calorimeters to measure electrons and photons, hadronic calorimeters to absorb high- energy particles and particle jets, and an outer layer of muon detectors. CMS has a solenoidal magnet with a 4 Tesla field.
