Description
Cosmic rays and magnetic monopoles research. View through one of the detectors of the MACRO (Monopole Astrophysics and Cosmic Ray Observatory) experiment in the Gran Sasso Laboratory, Italy, the largest underground laboratory in the world. The detector is formed by a tube 12m long filled with an extremely pure mineral oil mixed with a scintillating liquid. The researcher is located at one of the extremities of the tube where, in operation, a photomultiplier counter is located. Highly energetic muons in the cosmic rays interact with the scintillating liquid creating photons which are detected by the photomultipliers.
