Description
Destroyed French town, World War I. This is the town of Bailleul, in the Nord department of northern France. It is located in French Flanders, three kilometres from the Belgian border. During the war, this town was fought over as part of the fighting on the Western Front. The town was almost completely destroyed during three months of fierce fighting from April to the end of July 1918. it is estimated that 100,000 shells landed on the town, destroying 98 percent of its buildings. The fighting was part of the German Spring Offensive, followed by the Hundred Days Offensive by the Allies that led to the end of the war. This photograph, dating from 1918, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
