Artist's Description
Dentition of Nesophontes and Solenodon, illustration. At top are teeth from the extinct Nesophontes shrew that was endemic to Puerto Rico and fed mainly on insects. It became extinct after the introduction of rats and the destruction of its forest habitat. Across bottom are teeth from the still-extant Solenodon shrew that still lives on Cuba and Hispaniola. The two groups diverged around 40 million years ago, with Nesophontes going extinct in the last few centuries.
