Demodex folliculorum mite, illustration. This parasitic/commensal mite has an elongated body. Its preferred habitat is human eyelashes and eyebrows (hair shafts visible in background). It feeds mainly on sebum and dead skin cells. When large numbers of D. folliculorum are found on humans, the infestation is known as demodicosis.
