Description
Dead yellow-rump songbird (Parus uropygeo luteo) hanging on a thread from a flowering plant, 18th century. The plant is the helleborine lily. This is Plate 16 from a German edition of a work of Mark Catesby re-engraved by Seligmann and published in 1768. Mark Catesby (1682/3-1749) was a pioneering English naturalist in North America. Between 1729 and 1747, Catesby published his 'Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands', the first published account of the flora and fauna of North America. His naturalistic view of illustration was said to have inspired Audubon to illustrate animals in a natural setting of associated plants.
