Description
Heart implant surgery (image 7 of 12). Gloved hands preparing to cut a hole in the heart's left ventricle during heart implant surgery. The area, which has been reinforced with synthetic material, will be joined to a Novacor artificial heart by an artificial blood vessel. The implant takes over the left ventricle's function of pumping blood to the body through the body's main artery, the aorta. This abdominal implant is powered by an external battery. Artificial hearts are temporary measures used in cases of severe heart disease which keep patients alive until a heart donor is found. This sequence of artificial heart implantation runs from image M561/033-044.
