Creation and the Expulsion from Paradise, 15th-century painting. Dating from 1445 and created by artist Giovanni di Paolo, this painting consists of tempera and gold on wood. It shows the universe (lower left) as the Earth surrounded by concentric circles representing the four elements, the known planets, and the constellations of the zodiac. At upper left is God, presiding over his Creation and supported by his seraphim. At right is the Garden of Paradise (Eden) and its four rivers (bottom right). Adam and Eve are shown being expelled from Paradise by an angel. This painting was originally part of an altarpiece in the Church of San Domenico in Siena, Italy.
