Crayfish compound eye. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the compound eye (top) of a freshwater crayfish (Astacus astacus), showing over fifty of its thousands of simple eyes (ommatidia). The clear, outer hemispherical layer, is made up of cuticular lenses. Under this layer is another clear layer of corneagen cells, and under this layer is a layer of crystalline cones (pink and black). The bottom of the simple eye has black pigment cells (the two lower, thick black layers) that are the equivalent of the retina in mammals. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
