Artist's Description
Crab spider (Misumena sp.) sitting on the petal of a rose (Rosa sp.). The crab spider, or flower spider, gets its name from its two pairs of long front legs, which it holds away from its body, and its tendency to walk sideways. It lives on flowers and is an ambush hunter, attacking pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. It is able to prey on insects much larger than itself due to its quick-acting venom. The spider can change colour to match its surroundings, camouflaging itself from prey and predators. Crab spiders measure less than a centimetre in length and are found throughout the world. Photographed in Uniondale, South Africa.
