Description
Derelict coppice woodland. Coppice woodlands were traditionally managed for efficient production of wood resources. The main species seen here is the hazel (Corylus avellana). The branches ('small wood') from hazel were used to make hurdles and fencing, and were cropped on a ten-year cycle. In well managed coppices, the forest floor contains many other plant species. In derelict woodland such as this, the floor is shaded by the trees, denying light to the ground flora.
