Description
Computer graphic image of a human brain. The brain is the major organ of the nervous system and together with the spinal cord constitute the central nervous system. It is divided into three main structures: the cerebrum, the cerebellum and the brainstem. The surface of the cerebrum (centre) is folded into deep clefts so that only one third of the total surface is visible. It is the largest part of the brain and the site of most conscious and intelligent activities. The cerebellum (deep red at bottom right) is concerned with the maintenance of balance and coordination of movement. The brainstem (blue at bottom) links the brain with the spinal cord.
