Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus imperator), illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal is a proboscidean, an example of the group of animals from which elephants evolved. It was one of the largest mammoths, reaching a height of over 4 metres at the shoulder. It was common in North America, dating from the Middle Pleistocene to the Early Holocene (1.5 million to 11,000 years ago).
