Description
Diverticulitis. Coloured X-ray of the abdomen of an 86 year old man, showing diverticular disease of the large intestine (colon). Also known as colonic diverticular disease (CDD) or diverticuli- tis. The patient received a barium enema to high- light the structure of the colon (yellow). The colon is divided into regions: transverse (top), ascending (at right), descending (left), sigmoid (lower centre) leading to the rectum. Growths are seen on the outer wall of the descending & sigmoid colon. Known as diverticula, they are more common with age. Diverticulitis includes fever, vomiting, pain, and infection in these inflamed growths.
