Description
Bilharzia fluke. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of the head region of the male and female adult flukes of Schistosoma sp. These trematode worms cause bilharzia (schistosomiasis) in humans. Here, the head of the larger male worm (green) reveals its mouth at upper right and a round sucker (at centre). Its body forms a cleft (at lower left). The female adult fluke lives in this cleft and her head protrudes (lower centre). She is thus fertilised by the male. Flukes live in human blood vessels and their eggs contaminate freshwater. Bilharzia is a serious parasitic disease affecting 200 million people worldwide.
