Description
Healthy brain. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal section of a human head showing a healthy brain. The face is at right. The brain's cerebrum (upper centre) has a folded appe- arance. It is the largest part of the brain, and controls conscious thoughts. The brainstem runs down from the lower centre of the cerebrum and joins the spinal cord (bottom left). To the left of the brainstem is the cerebellum. This area con- trols balance and posture. MRI gives slice images of the body by using radio waves and a magnetic field to provoke tissues to emit signals depending on their composition. It is a useful diagnostic aid, especially for studying nervous tissue.
