Healthy brain. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal section of the human head showing a healthy brain. The face is at left. The cerebrum of the brain (upper centre) has a folded appearance. It is the largest part of the brain, and controls conscious thoughts. The brainstem runs down from the lower centre of the cerebrum and joins the spinal cord (not seen). To the right of the brainstem is the cerebellum. This folded triangular tissue controls balance and posture. MRI uses radio waves and a magnetic field to provoke tissues to emit signals depending on their composition. It is a useful diagnostic aid, particularly for studying nervous tissue.
