DNA fingerprinting. Colin Pitchfork, who was found guilty on DNA fingerprinting evidence of the rape & murder of two 15 year old girls. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 1988. Pitchfork, a Leicestershire man born in 1961, was trapped because he arranged for a workmate to stand in for him when the police asked over 2000 men in 3 villages to take the DNA fingerprinting test. It was the first mass screening by genetic fingerprinting. Pitchfork's deception was later revealed to police. He was tested & his DNA fingerprint was found to match that obtained from semen found on the girls' bodies.
