Description
View of the Cockroft-Walton generator at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York. The Cockroft-Walton is at the beginning of the particle acceleration process. Electrons are added to hydrogen atoms in an ion source in the generator, and the resulting ions (a proton with 2 electrons attached) are accelerated in the high-voltage machine. The protons are stripped of their electrons & then pass through a linear accelerator or linac before being injected into Brookhaven's major accelerator, the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS).
