Description
Coal distillation apparatus. 19th century artwork of the distillation of coal to produce a hydrocarbon gas to be used as a fuel. The coal is heated up to 1300 degrees Celsius to produce the gas. These diagrams illustrate the coal distillation method invented by the English engineer William Murdoch (1754-1839). He developed the use of coal gas for lighting in the 1790s.
