Description
Coal and coke mining, early 20th century. Miners at the entrance to a mine where coal is being extracted and heated in ovens in the absence of oxygen to produce coke (a fuel with a high carbon content). The coke is then mostly used as a fuel in the steel industry. This is the Richard Mine (founded 1903), operated by the Elkins Coal and Coke Company. This mine is located on the Deckers Creek tributary near Dellslow, Monongalia County, West Virginia, USA. This photograph is part of the Historic American Engineering Record.
