Cloud vortex street, satellite image. North is at top. The island of Jan Mayen (white, upper left) is located in the Arctic Ocean. It is casting a cloud vortex street (swirls running diagonally across centre) as winds flow around it. These are also known as Von Karman vortices. Image data obtained on 5 April 2012, with the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) sensor on one of NASA's Earth Observing System satellites (Terra and Aqua).
