Description
Cloud base recorder, with its cover removed. Also called a ceilometer, this device typically uses a laser or other optical source to measure the height of overhead clouds. Optical models use triangulation of light reflected from the clouds, while laser models detected scattered light from a laser beam projected upwards. This is a Mark 5 cloud base recorder. The data gathered is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed at the Met Office facilities in Beaufort Park, Bracknell, UK.
