Close-up of the wing of the butterfly Urania madagascariensis, showing the glowing colours of the scales which cover the wing surface. These small scales overlap like shingles, each with an individual colour, and together they produce the magnificent colours and patterns of the butterfly wing. Urania madagascariensis is one of the largest and most beautiful species of uraniid butterfly; the scale colours glow in shades of blue, green, red and gold. As light is needed to display the iridescent colours, this butterfly is active during the day. Urania madagascariensis is found in Madagascar.
