Clifford Glenwood Shull (1915-2001), US physicist. Shull is best known for his pioneering work on neutron scattering. This technique includes a variety of methods used to study the atomic and magnetic structures of materials, in which a sample is bombarded with neutrons (subatomic particles) and the way in which the neutrons scatter (bounce off or pass through the sample) is recorded. Shull was awarded a share of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.
