Artist's Description
Cliff made of layers (strata) of limestone and mudstone seen above a storm beach. The thicker layers are limestone which is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) formed from the deposited shells of dead marine organisms. The strata forms as a result of breaks in the sedimentation. The soft shale layers are a result of pre-existing calcareous rock being eroded and deposited as sediment. A storm beach forms when lumps of rock, cobbles, usually from an eroding cliff, are moved high up a beach due to the high waves of a storm. Photographed at Nash Point, Wales.
