Description
China. Stone rubbing of a map of China from the 12th century. The original map was engraved on a stone dated Fuchang 7 nian (1136 AD). The stone is now in the Forest of Stone Steles museum in China. The stone rubbing was made in about 1933. The map title is Hua yi tu. Chinese writing is seen around the edges of the map. The map shows China at the time of the Nan Song Dynasty, from the east to the sea (at right). The Great Wall of China runs from top right to upper centre. The two major west-east rivers are seen: the Yellow River (upper) and the Yangtze (lower). The island of Hainan is seen at bottom centre.
