Description
Chemical warhead. Artwork showing the internal structure of a warhead designed to deliver chemical weapons. The vanes at the rear stabilise the weapon in flight. Inside is the chemical payload (green) and an explosive charge (yellow). When the warhead impacts its target (lower left), the explosives are ignited (centre) by a pressure trigger (red) on the top of the warhead. The explosion rips apart the warhead, releasing the chemicals (lower right). The Chemical Weapons Convention (1997) is an international arms control treaty that bans the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons.
