Artist's Description
Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974), American aviation pioneer. In 1927, Lindbergh became the first person to make a solo, non-stop flight across the Atlantic from New York, USA, to Paris, France. He competed for a prize of $25,000 offered in 1919 by Raymond B. Orteig. Lindbergh's flight in his monoplane, The Spirit of St. Louis, began at 7:25am on 20 May 1927 and lasted 33 hours and 32 minutes. Lindbergh achieved overnight world-wide fame. This fame led to the kidnap and murder of his 19-month-old son in 1932. Lindbergh later experimented with making an artificial heart and became an author.
